June 5th marks the 51st annual World Environment Day. This year’s topic “Solutions to plastic pollution” raise the plastic economy to the global agenda yet again, addressing the pressing need for new and circular solutions for the plastic economy.

Since its inception in 1972, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has designated June 5th as a day to raise awareness and encourage action on environmental concerns. Each year, a theme is chosen to highlight a specific aspect of sustainability. This year's theme “Solutions to plastic pollution” highlights the solutions needed to combat plastic pollution and which industry changes are necessary.

We are glad that the issues related to plastic pollution and lack of proper waste handling solutions is so high on the global agenda, says CEO in Recuro, Arve Jakobsen.

Recuro develops recycling solutions for plasticwaste and aims to have their first plastic recycling facility ready by 2025.

New recycling technology

Today, only a fraction of plastic waste is recycled – the majority is either landfilled, incinerated or leaks into nature. With new technology, a larger share of plastic waste canbe recycled, thus replacing fossil input with recycled materials. Recuro's aim, is to recycle the plastics that are either incinerated or landfilled today, increasing the total share of recycled materials.

Recuro’s solution is based on pyrolysis – a thermal decomposition process that utilises heat to converts organic materials into new products. Recuro's pyrolysis technology stands out for its efficiency and versatility.

It can process various forms of plastic waste, transforming them into biochar, pyrolysis oil, and pyrolysis gas. These products have a range of applications, from energy generation to input in new production cycles, says Jakobsen.

Global call to action

The unsustainable production and disposal of waste have led to a pollution problem that threatens ecosystems, human health, and the overall well-being of the planet. Initiatives that raise plastic pollution to the global agenda is therefore essential.

We are happy that the UN chose plastic pollution as this year’s topic for the UN environment day, and we are exited to be part of the solution.
